Embodiment Construction

[0028] The present invention includes methods and devices for treating patients with respiratory insufficiency (RI), such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The present invention can detect changes in the severity of a disease condition. For example, some COPD patients have exacerbated disease. Progression of the condition requires modification of the medical treatment plan. Exacerbations that are left untreated may result in further deterioration and may require hospitalization. However, if the disease progresses sufficiently to detect it, for example in the earliest stages of its onset, it can be treated and hospitalization avoided. The indication of changes in severity of the device of the present invention provides a basis for detecting these changes in RI or COPD patients, as well as informing the patient and / or the medical institution of the potential need for medical intervention in the RI or COPD patient's condition.

Abstract

The invention discloses apparatus, systems and methods for detecting a severity change in respiratory insufficiency or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The supplied pressure may optionally be determined during pressure treatment that satisfies a target ventilation. The supplied pressure or representative data may be compared to one or more thresholds that are selected to represent a change in the condition of the RI or COPD patient such as an exacerbation of a prior condition. Results of the comparisons may trigger one or more warnings or messages to notify a patient or physician of a pending change to the patient's RI or COPD condition so that the patient may more immediately seek medical attention to treat the condition.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 214,843, filed April 29, 2009, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to systems, methods and devices for detecting and / or treating respiratory insufficiency, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In particular, the invention relates to detecting changes in severity under these conditions. Background technique [0004] Respiratory insufficiency affects millions of people. In patients with this disease, the lungs cannot take in enough oxygen or expel enough carbon dioxide to meet the needs of the cells of the patient's body. For example, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) affects nearly 13 million Americans and 10 million Europeans. COPD is a disease that damages the lungs. The airways and alveoli of the lungs can lose their elasticity. Alveolar...
