[0016] Referring now to the drawings, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout the views, as described above, figure 1 An adjustable gastric band 101 of the type described in the above incorporated reference is shown in . The gastric band 101 includes an elongate flexible expandable portion 110 , which may also be referred to as a balloon portion, and an elongate flexible and substantially inextensible strap portion 120 . as figure 2 As shown and described above, when the gastric band 101 is in use, it is placed around the stomach 111 with the ends of the gastric band secured to each other.

[0017] see you again figure 1 , which shows a surgically implantable fluid injection port 10 made in accordance with the present invention. The expandable portion 110 is in fluid communication with the infusion port 10 through the conduit 52 . The catheter 52 has a proximal end 53 connected to the port 10 and a distal end 55 connected to the adjustable gastric band 101 . ...

Abstract

An implantable surgical infusion port for an adjustable gastric band has a shield with a distal back with a recess. The shield also includes a proximal opening and a fluid reservoir. The port also has a needle-penetrable septum connected to the shield adjacent the opening. The port also includes a conduit connection member in fluid communication with the reservoir. The catheter connection member is connected to and extends distally from the recess in the back such that the catheter connection member does not extend distal to the most distal portion of the back.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention is applied to traditional endoscope and open surgical instruments, and also to robot-assisted surgery. The invention still further relates to adjustable surgically implanted bands, such as gastric bands for treating obesity. Background technique [0002] The percentage of the world's population suffering from morbid obesity is continuing to increase. Severely obese people tend to increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, lung disease and accidents. Due to the impact of morbid obesity on the life of patients, people are studying the method of treating morbid obesity. [0003] Various nonsurgical treatments for morbid obesity have been attempted without substantial permanent success. Dietary advice, behavior modification, wire binding of the patient's jaw to close it, and pharmacological approaches have been tried, but all have failed to cure the condition. Mechanical devices inserted into the body through non-surgical metho...
