Abstract

A pattern of user activity can be determined using signal data from a collection of computing devices. Activity patterns can be used to infer user intent with respect to the user's interactions with the computing device or to predict likely future actions of the user. In one implementation, a collection of computing devices is monitored to detect user activity using sensors associated with the computing devices. Activity characteristics associated with the detected user activity are determined and used to identify activity patterns based on a plurality of user activities having similar characteristics. Examples of patterns of user activity may include patterns based on time, location, content, or other contexts. Inferred user intent or predicted future actions can be used to provide improved user experience, such as personalization, modify the functionality of user equipment, or provide more efficient bandwidth or power consumption.

Description

Background technique [0001] People are increasingly interacting with and relying on computing devices for information, recommendations, and other services to assist them in everyday tasks. But it remains a difficult technical problem for computing devices to understand the user's intent during these interactions. In such interactions, users are often frustrated by the inability of their computerized personal assistant application or service to understand their intent or anticipate their needs. [0002] At the same time, many users of computing devices have repetitive usage patterns. For example, a user might launch an email application on their mobile device every weekday morning, then go to work, browse a favorite news site during lunch, call a close friend or family member on the way home from get off work, or use their Laptop plans its annual vacation around May. By learning these patterns of user activity, computerized personal assistant applications and services can pro...
