Embodiment approach

[0024] Various embodiments relate to methods, systems, and apparatus for determining geographic coordinates (eg, GPS coordinates) of an indoor location or any location where GPS signals cannot be reliably received. In some implementations, the device collects GPS and radio frequency (eg, WiFi) signals at various locations around a building or other structure. For each location, geographic coordinates and radio frequency (RF) data are associated to form what is referred to herein as an anchor point. In some implementations, multiple anchors are collected by one device or crowdsourced from multiple devices. The anchor points are then used to determine the geographic coordinates of the location inside the building or any (partially) enclosed space. The anchor points determined in this way can then be used to create additional anchor points that penetrate deep into the building.

Abstract

In one aspect, information of multiple anchor points is received and stored. The information of each anchor point includes Global Positioning System (GPS) data of a particular location and radio frequency (RF) data that was obtained at a device at the particular location. A geo coordinate is determined for an indoor location based on the RF data obtained at the indoor location and the information of the anchor points. Various embodiments pertain to software, systems, devices and methods relating to anchor points and / or the obtaining of a geo coordinate for a location.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to techniques for determining location. More specifically, various embodiments of the invention relate to determining geographic coordinates of an indoor location. Background technique [0002] Many modern smartphones and mobile devices can determine their own location using the Global Positioning System (GPS). In a typical implementation, a smartphone receives signals from multiple GPS satellites. GPS signals help indicate the distance between the smartphone and the satellites. The smartphone then uses the GPS signal to determine its location, which is typically expressed as geographic coordinates or GPS coordinates (eg, a pair of longitude and latitude coordinates). An advantage of the GPS coordinate system is that it is widely adopted and compatible with a large number of location-aware applications. [0003] However, one disadvantage of the GPS system is that it is ineffective or substantially less effective in ind...
