Embodiment Construction

[0029] The following exemplary embodiments will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in the context of uterine fibroid treatment, and particularly in the context of ablation of uterine fibroids using Radio Frequency Induced Thermotherapy (RFITT) techniques.

[0030] figure 1 Different anatomical locations of uterine fibroids that may potentially afflict patients are illustrated. Submucosal fibroids 40 are located on the inner wall of the uterus 10 . Subserosal fibroids 20 are located on the lateral wall of the uterus 10 . Intramural fibroids 50 are located within wall 14 of uterus 10 . A pedunculated fibroid 30 is attached to the outer wall of the uterus 10 . Because fibroids 30 are attached to the outer wall of uterus 10, fibroids 30 are more specifically referred to as pedunculated subserosal fibroids. Fibroid 34 is called a pedunculated submucosal fibroid because it attaches to the inner wall of uterus 10 .

Abstract

Electrosurgical fibroid ablation systems and methods employ a probe (300) having at least two electrodes (320, 330) to perform bipolar ablation. The probe (300) is inserted into the uterine fibroid (50) along the long axis (B) direction of the ellipsoid fibroid (50) (direction approximately parallel to the uterine wall (14)) to enter the fibroid (50). Inserting the probe (300) in this direction facilitates the ablation of the fibroid (50) with a single probe (300) penetration, since the ablated area is often within a region having an ellipsoidal shape that aligns with that of the fibroid (50). Growth in volume. Furthermore, any scars (170B) left by the procedure often run in a direction parallel to the uterine wall (14), and are thus less likely to spread and cause rupture of the uterine wall (14) during pregnancy.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present disclosure relates to methods and devices for ablation of uterine fibroids. [0002] Uterine fibroids are the most common pelvic tumor in women, affecting approximately one in four women during their reproductive years. Uterine fibroids are usually noncancerous, but if they develop during pregnancy, they can potentially cause infertility or cause adverse effects. Typical symptoms include unusual bleeding, pressure, or pain. [0003] Uterine fibroids are classified based on their location on the uterus. Submucosal fibroids form on the inner wall of the uterus; subserous fibroids form on the outer wall of the uterus; intramural fibroids form within the wall of the uterus; and pedunculated fibroids are attached to the inner or outer wall of the uterus . [0004] At present, the treatment of uterine fibroids includes both drug technology and surgical technology. Medications are often insufficient to treat the symptoms of fibroids, and s...
