Abstract

The invention discloses a quality scalable video coding method based on mean square error threshold. In the method, by making use of influence of difference of size of pattern vectors on quality of a reconstructed image, different quality layers are coded through characteristic pattern bases with pattern vectors of different size, and thus, scalability of video quality is realized. Firstly, a video image is segmented into blocks, and a base layer is coded through the characteristic pattern base with greater pattern vectors; by comparison with the mean square error threshold, the image blocks with greater mean square error are further segmented, and the segmented image blocks are coded through the characteristic pattern base with smaller pattern vectors so as to form an enhancement layer. The method provided by the invention only need to search and match an optimal pattern vector for the image blocks, and further codes an index, thus, the existing very complex intra-frame predicdion, inter-frame prediction and inter-layer prediction are abandoned, complexity is reduced greatly, and compression performance is improved.
