[0171] Materials and methods

[0172] Animals. 6-7 week old male CD2F1 mice (BALB / c x DBA / 2, Harlan / Charles River the Netherlands). After one week of acclimatization, the mice were divided into weight-matched groups: (1) a control group receiving a control diet, (2) a tumor-bearing group receiving a control diet, and (3) a tumor-bearing group receiving an experimental diet. The data presented are derived from the combination of several experimental trials with identical animal characteristics and experimental procedures (unless otherwise stated) and differing only in the experimental food used. All experimental procedures were approved by the Animal Ethical Committee (DEC consult, Bilthoven, The Netherlands) and followed principles of good laboratory animal care.

[0173] Experimental foods (category A and B experiments). Experiments were divided into: (A) designed to test nutritional components added to a background diet (AIN93-M) and supplied as pellets (addition of high ...

Prior to this study, screening procedures were not performed in the context of cancer care. A total of 24 subjects (12 per group) completed the protocol. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) radiographic evidence of cancer, (2) age >40 years (male and female), (3) ability to give infor...

Abstract

The invention relates to a nutritional composition comprising (a) at least 18 en % of proteinaceous matter, said proteinaceous matter comprising whey; (b) at least 12 wt % of leucine, based on total proteinaceous matter; and (c) a lipid fraction comprising at least a [omega]-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid selected from the group of eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, eicosatetraenoic acid and docosapentaenoic acid for improving the muscle function in a mammal, for improving daily activity, for improving physical performance, for providing a better prognosis in terms of extended life-expectancy, for improving compliance to an anti-cancer therapy or for improving a quality of life.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of Chinese Patent Application No. 200980134296.3 entitled "Nutritional Composition for Improving Muscle Function and Daily Activities" with the filing date of July 2, 2009. technical field [0002] The present invention relates to a composition comprising a proteinaceous substance comprising leucine and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. [0003] The invention also relates to the use of a composition suitable for improving muscle function in mammals. The invention also relates to the use of compositions suitable for improving the daily activities of mammals. Background technique [0004] Body composition, muscle function and daily activity are clinically highly relevant parameters, as muscle function and daily activity are important contributors to quality of life in cancer patients. Furthermore, improvements in a patient's physical condition, as reflected by body composition and physical performance, may contribute to i...
