The embodiment of the invention discloses a method and system for handling a short message as well as a short message gateway and an interactive function entity. The method for handling the short message comprises the following steps: receiving a short message sent by a short message service centre; acquiring the next-hop node information of the short message; and if the next-hop node information is second identifier information, sending the short message to the interactive function entity corresponding to the second identifier information so that the interactive function entity sends the short message to a mobility management entity (MME) serving user equipment (UE) receiving the short message. The embodiment of the invention can realize that the short message gateway can send the short message to the MME which then sends the short message to the UE even when the UE is only attached to a long term evolution (LTE) network currently.
