Embodiment Construction

[0012] According to various aspects, there is provided an apparatus, system, method, computer product, computer program, etc. to protect against overload conditions of electric motors, such as permanent magnet DC motors used in linear or rotary actuators. The fundamental parameters of a permanent magnet DC motor are linearly related, i.e. an increase in load torque will result in a proportional decrease in motor speed and a proportional increase in motor input current. Any of the three properties can be measured to predict the status of the other two properties. Because motor speed in a permanent magnet DC motor is inversely proportional to motor current, speed is an accurate predictor of current. Thus, instead of current as an indicator, the speed of the motor (eg, motor RPM, etc.) can be used as an indicator of load. Thus, depending on the speed of the motor and its monitoring, motor overload conditions can be detected and protective measures taken.

Abstract

A method, apparatus or computer program implements an overload prevention approach involving monitoring a speed (410) o a motor, detecting an overload condition of the motor based on the monitored speed, and controlling an operation of the motor according to the detected overload condition.

Description

[0001] This International Disclosure is based on and claims priority to U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 11 / 461,170, filed July 31, 2006, entitled "Overloade Prevention Device for Permanent MagnetDC Motors," the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference . technical field [0002] The present invention relates to a method, system and apparatus for preventing overload conditions on electric motors, in particular permanent magnet DC motors as used in linear actuators or rotary actuators. Background technique [0003] Traditionally, where electric motors are employed, the current is monitored in some way to prevent overloading. This can be accomplished with a thermally activated switch commonly known as a thermal protector. The device requires the overload condition to last for a certain period of time to heat the thermal element, from seconds to minutes depending on the severity of the overload. Then, the device needs a period of time to cool down after ...
