Problems solved by technology

[0018] Although this GUI is sometimes more flexible than the toolbar / application bar of FIG. 2 in allowing the user to organize content, the application dock 300 is still limited in the number of applications it can accommodate at any one time.

Abstract

A method for displaying graphical representations of launchable applications on a display of a device comprising: displaying on the display a visible mechanism for launching one or more launchable applications, wherein the visible mechanism comprises multiple user-activatable graphical representations that respectively correspond to multiple launchable applications; detecting a position of a user input proximate to at least one of the graphical representations; in response to the detecting, increasing in size the at least one of the graphical representations; and increasing one or more of the remaining graphical representations to one or more respective sizes, each of which is at least approximately inversely related to a distance between the associated graphical representation and the detected position.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates to graphical user interfaces for computer systems. More specifically, the present invention relates to a system and method for interfacing with application programs and operating systems that provide flexible GUI customization. [0002] The development of the computer industry has not paralleled the growth rate and complexity. For example, personal computers that began as low-powered calculators with limited storage capacity, tape-driven input, and a monochrome display can now be used for almost any data-processing job. While this increase in functional speed is almost sufficient to meet the needs of application programmers, end users, etc., the corresponding increase in complexity creates a problem of ease of use, which is a problem that is relatively slow to solve in the industry. Designers are thus faced with a new challenge: to enable people with relatively little computer training to take advantage of this comput...
