The method includes steps of a, collecting traffic flow data, including time headway itself, influencing saturation time headway; b, training parameters of a hidden Markov chain model through the collected traffic flow data; c, performing real time collection on time headway in front of a stop line of the intersection, estimating a hidden time headway state behind a time headway sequence and obtaining a continuous stable time headway sequence; d, averaging the stable time headway sequence and utilizing the reciprocal of the average value as the saturation flow rate corresponding to the stop line. The method provided by the invention can be used for real time estimation of the saturation flow rate and provides parameter basis for traffic control.
